Especially, more stone figures have been erected after introduction of the Chinese geomantic principles. Such figures were mainly placed at the entrance to a town, tomb, or other places of which energy level is considered to be deficient.Indeed, some records said that disaster or misfortune could be prevented after construction of such stone figures. Also, according to other records, the figures were considered to be effective in birth of a great man. Therefore, it is considered that the stone figures were erected to prevent misfortune or guard the town.Shape of Jeju DongjaseokAlthough it looks like somewhat unbalanced, it shows completely natural looking.Although it looks like somewhat coarse and incomplete, it is a very emotional one.Why do we feel so?Jeju Dongjaseok is an image of our old friend, unrefined and placid.It is made by coarsely trimming the basalt with much holes. Its body is flat and long.Its eyes and nose are carved in half-relief and its mouth is engraved.When compared to the stone figures found in other areas, its mouth is smaller. Also, most have the round eyes. In general, a couple of stone figures are erected while facing each other. However, two couples of stone figures can be found.Kinds of Jeju DongjaseokSince there are various kinds of Dongjaseok, such as civil officer figures wearing the formal hat, military officer figures holding the sword, or other figures with liquor bottle, winecup, fan, baby, or flowers, it is considered that the folk beliefs, Buddhism, and Confucianism were deeply rooted at that time. Further, there is Dolharubang representing Jeju. It was also called "Beoksumeori", "Useokmok", or "Museokmok". There are animal-shaped stone figures at Sineom-ri, Aewol-eup, which are considered to play the role of guardian deity. Further, at the stone Buddhist platform in the backyard of Hwacheon Temple (Hwacheon-dong), there are the natural stone figures having the human face that appear to symbolize five Buddha.
